about

Several Irish ballads and even an old English folk song share this name. The lyrics of the present version were written by Canon O’Neill, the parish priest of Kilcoo (Irish for the ‘church of mourning’), Co. Down, sometime after 1919. The music of this version is attributed to the blind arranger Carl Hardebeck and is taken from a manuscript which was in the possession of centenarian Kathleen Dallat (1910-2011) – Canon O’Neill’s niece - of Ballycastle, Co. Antrim. The ballad chronicles the 1916 Easter Uprising.

Lyrics: Canon Charles O’Neill (1887–1963)
Melody: Carl Hardebeck (1869–1945)
